Our Self Catering Cottage is Refreshed, Refurbished & Ready to Rock n Roll…. Not us though, we’re pooped!
After nearly 10 years of welcoming guests to our Self catering holiday cottage we decided to make full use of the forced Lock-down closure to refresh our Holiday cottage. With bookings throughout the year we find that we rarely get the chance do anything more than simple maintenance. Here was a chance to update the place.
When we first bought the cottage it was in a poor state. A part of a flint wall had collapsed allowing water to seep into the living room. The kitchen, bathroom and master bedroom all required substantial rebuilding works. It took 4 months to do the work required and we opened it to the public in the autumn of 2011.
The Living room
These photos compare the cottage mid renovation in 2011 against today’s finished product.
The main living area seemed okay at first. However dampness in the plaster on a supporting beam meant that it had to be stripped right back to the belt & braces. The stair treads were unsafe and a doorway to the garage had to be blocked up.
We have now installed a 43″ Smart 4k Ultra HD TV which is connected direct to the internet via an Ethernet cable. This allows great connectivity to Netflix, Amazon Prime, BBC i-Player and other catch up TV providers plus the web too. We’ve re-painted the room, fitted a new carpet, replaced the suite and renovated some of the existing furniture. Alison has also made new curtains for all the windows as well.
Once chaotic now the whole room feels so much fresher.
Same room but from the opposite angle. Originally we were helped in the decorating of the cottage by both friends and relatives. We also relied on an excellent local builder, electricians & plumbers.
The Bathroom and the Kitchen….
This photo shows the original ‘look’ of the lavatory and the next picture was after we removed everything except the loo which too was then removed.
These areas were seriously out dated and 4 small rooms had to be completely stripped out. This was so we could re-build the hollowed shell into a new bathroom and a new kitchen. Remember that this building is close to 270 years old and presented us with many difficulties. These were not helped by the 1970’s additions that also had to be torn out. The water heater in this cottage used so much power than when someone had a shower the lights in the main house & the cottage actually dimmed!
The shower is a large walk in unit, we’ve renewed the Sink, taps & repainted the room too.
The kitchen has just had a fresh coat of paint and a new roller blind.
The Master Bedroom…
The master bedroom was originally a strange affair. It had a split height floor and we had to remove & reposition half the floor so the room could be used as a bedroom.
Now fully re-painted and with extra little touches like bath robes and USB power sockets the master bedroom is ready for our guests.
In the garden our landscaping has now matured and forms a perfect suntrap for your afternoon G&T.
